Being stuck is a different problem from breaking down, and it needs different equipment. Winch-out recovery is for vehicles that have left the road surface — into a drain, a ditch, soft ground, sand, or down an embankment — and cannot be driven out. We cover the south-east Colombo corridor around the clock.
Situations we recover
- A wheel dropped into a roadside drain or culvert
- Bogged down in mud or soft ground after rain
- Slid off an embankment or into a ditch
- Stuck in sand near the coast
- Beached on a high kerb, ramp or unfinished road
- Trapped in a flooded stretch
Why not to try it yourself
The two things people reach for — spinning the wheels harder, and a rope tied to a friend’s vehicle — are the two things most likely to make it worse. Spinning the wheels digs the vehicle deeper and can cook a clutch or a differential. An improvised tow rope attached to the wrong point can tear a bumper off, bend a subframe, or snap under load and become genuinely dangerous. A proper winch recovery uses rated equipment attached to real recovery points, pulling in a controlled line.
What we need to know
Tell us how far off the road the vehicle is, what the ground is like, and whether it is upright. That decides whether this is a straightforward pull or a job needing more anchoring. A photo sent on WhatsApp is worth more than a paragraph of description here — send one if it is safe to do so.
After the recovery
A vehicle that has been in water or deep mud should be checked before it is driven far, particularly the brakes and the air intake. If water may have entered the engine, do not start it. Tell us and we will tow it rather than recover and release it — starting an engine that has taken in water is how a recoverable situation becomes a rebuild.
Monsoon season and roadside drains
The single most common winch-out call we get across the corridor is a wheel dropped into a roadside drain, and it peaks in the monsoon for an obvious reason: standing water hides the edge of the road. A driver pulling over to let something pass, or edging around an obstruction, puts a wheel where the road appears to be and finds it is not. The vehicle is usually undamaged, but it is completely immobile, and trying to drive it out generally drops it further.
Recovery points matter
Most vehicles have designated recovery points, and on many modern cars they are a screw-in eye stored with the spare wheel rather than something visible under the bumper. If you know where yours is, get it out while you wait — it makes the recovery quicker and considerably safer than improvising an attachment point. If you have no idea, leave it to us rather than guessing; pulling on a suspension arm or a bumper mount is how a free recovery becomes a repair bill.
Winch-out coverage
Across the south-east Colombo corridor, twenty-four hours a day, including the outer areas where soft ground and open drains are most common — Homagama, Kottawa, Athurugiriya, Kaduwela, Malabe, Kesbewa and the surrounding towns.
What decides the price
Towing is never one flat number. Here is exactly what we ask about, so you know what the quote is based on.
- Distance — How far we travel to reach you, and how far the vehicle then has to go.
- Vehicle type — A hatchback, an SUV, a van and a motorcycle are four different jobs with different equipment.
- Condition — Rolling on all four wheels is simple. Seized wheels, no gearbox or accident damage need a flatbed or a winch.
- Access and time — A clear main road at noon is not the same as a narrow lane, a basement car park or a ditch at 3am.
Tell us the vehicle, where it is and what happened. You get a clear price on the phone before a truck rolls, and you approve it before we start.
