People before vehicles, without exception
If anyone is hurt, that is the only thing that matters until it is dealt with. Get everyone clear of the carriageway, call for medical help, and do not move an injured person unless leaving them where they are is more dangerous than moving them. The vehicles are not going anywhere and they do not matter. Everything below this paragraph assumes nobody is injured.
Photograph everything before anything moves
This is the step people skip and regret. Once a vehicle is moved, the scene cannot be reconstructed, and the position of the vehicles relative to each other and to the road is often the single most important piece of evidence about what happened. Photograph from several angles and from far enough back to show the road, the lane markings and any skid marks. Then photograph the damage on your vehicle and on the other, close up. Get the other driver’s name, contact number and vehicle number. If anyone stopped and saw it, get their number too — witnesses are almost impossible to find afterwards and enormously valuable at the time.
Why collision damage means flatbed
A vehicle that has been hit rarely has intact geometry, even when the damage looks cosmetic. Suspension arms bend without leaving a visible mark. A wheel can be knocked out of alignment far enough that the tyre scrubs. Bearings damaged in the impact will not survive being rolled. Towing such a vehicle on its own wheels does further damage over every kilometre, and that additional damage does not appear on any accident report it simply becomes part of the repair, at your cost.
There is a second reason, which matters for the claim. An assessor examines the vehicle in the condition it arrives. Damage introduced during recovery is difficult to separate from damage caused by the collision, and that ambiguity works against you every time. A vehicle carried on a deck arrives in exactly the state the accident left it.
Loading a damaged vehicle properly
How a damaged vehicle is winched onto the deck matters more than people assume. Pulling on a bumper mount, a control arm or a body panel because it is the nearest accessible point is how a repairable car becomes a structural one. Recovery points exist for this and are used where they survive the impact; where they do not, rated straps spread the load across a structure that can take it. If a wheel will not turn, it is skated or the deck is used to slide the vehicle rather than dragging it on a locked tyre.
Choosing the destination
You choose it, not the operator, and not whoever arrives first. The realistic options are your own garage, an approved repairer if your policy names one, an assessor, or holding the vehicle securely until your insurer tells you where it should go. If your policy requires notification before the vehicle moves, make that call from the roadside it takes two minutes and prevents a dispute later.
Be particularly careful about operators who arrive unrequested at accident scenes on busy roads. They will be helpful and insistent and will want the vehicle. Getting a car back from a yard you did not choose is difficult, slow and occasionally expensive.
Undriveable but not wrecked
A large share of the vehicles we recover are not dramatic write-offs. They have moderate damage and something that makes driving a bad idea — a radiator holed and leaking, a bonnet that will not latch, a headlight gone with darkness coming, a wheel arch fouling a tyre. These are exactly the cases where the temptation to drive on is strongest and the consequences are most avoidable. A holed radiator driven three kilometres becomes an overheated engine on top of the accident damage.
Night recoveries
A significant proportion of accident calls come after dark, and at night the recovery carries more risk than the collision did. Following traffic is faster, visibility is worse, and a scene that is obvious in daylight is nearly invisible at speed. The truck arrives with proper lighting and, where the road geometry allows, is positioned between the scene and approaching traffic before any work starts. Everyone not needed for the recovery should be well off the carriageway, behind a barrier if there is one.
Afterwards
Keep every photograph, note the time and location precisely, and write down what happened while it is fresh memory reorganises events surprisingly quickly and a contemporaneous note is worth a great deal. If the vehicle is being held rather than repaired immediately, make sure you know where it is and who has access.
Minor collisions still need the same discipline
Low-speed impacts in traffic are the most common accidents in this corridor by a wide margin, and they are the ones where people are most likely to shrug and drive off. That is usually a mistake for two reasons. Modern bumpers are designed to absorb a low-speed impact and hide the evidence, so a car that looks barely marked can have a deformed crash structure behind the cover and a radiator support that is no longer square. And an agreement reached at the roadside without photographs or contact details becomes worthless the moment the other party changes their account of it.
Spend the five minutes. Photograph both vehicles and the position, exchange details, and if there is any doubt about whether the vehicle is safe to drive, have it moved properly rather than finding out on the way home.
