Recovery is the wider job that towing sits inside. A tow moves a vehicle that is already accessible, upright and safe to lift. A recovery starts earlier than that — with a vehicle that is somewhere it should not be, in a state that has to be assessed before anything is attached to it. Our vehicle recovery service covers Colombo around the clock and handles the whole range, from a car that simply will not restart to one that has left the road entirely.

What separates recovery from towing

Most people use the two words interchangeably, and for a straightforward breakdown it barely matters. It starts to matter when the vehicle is not sitting neatly on a flat surface with four wheels that turn.

A vehicle in a drain, on soft ground, part-way down an embankment, jammed in a basement ramp or resting on something other than its wheels cannot simply be lifted. It has to be brought back to a position where it can be lifted, and that first stage is the recovery. Do it carelessly and you cause more damage in ten minutes than the original failure did — a bumper torn off, a subframe pulled out of line, a sill crushed by a strap in the wrong place.

The same applies to condition rather than position. A vehicle with a seized wheel, a locked steering column, no brakes or a gearbox that will not release is a recovery problem even on level tarmac, because the normal method is not available.

What we recover

The assessment comes first

Every recovery starts with a look, not a winch line. What is the vehicle resting on. Is it stable, or will it move when load is applied. Which recovery points survive, and which have been damaged. Which wheels turn. Is there anything underneath that will catch when it moves. Where can the truck stand so the pull is in a useful direction rather than sideways.

That assessment takes a few minutes and it decides everything that follows. Skipping it is how a straightforward job becomes an expensive one, and it is the single clearest difference between a recovery done properly and a vehicle dragged onto a deck by whoever arrived first.

Why the wrong pull costs money

Modern vehicles have designated recovery points, and on many cars that means a screw-in eye stored with the spare wheel rather than a visible hook. Those points are engineered to take a straight pull. Almost nothing else on the vehicle is.

Bumper mounts tear. Control arms bend. Tie-down loops on the underside are for securing a vehicle in transit, not for dragging it out of a ditch, and they fail under a fraction of the load people assume. When an attachment point fails under tension it does so suddenly and the equipment goes somewhere unpredictable, which is why improvised recoveries injure people every year.

Where a recovery point is damaged or unreachable, the answer is rated strapping spread across structure that can carry the load — not the nearest solid-looking piece of metal.

Recovery after flooding

Colombo produces a specific recovery job every wet season: a vehicle driven into standing water that turned out to be deeper than it looked, now stopped and possibly filling. Two rules cover it.

First, get out and get clear before thinking about the vehicle. Moving water is far stronger than it appears and a car can shift without warning. Second, and this one is absolute: do not attempt to restart the engine. Water does not compress. Turning over an engine that has drawn water into the intake bends a connecting rod and turns a recoverable vehicle into a rebuild. Say on the phone that the vehicle has been in water and it will be moved rather than started.

Afterwards, brakes need checking at low speed before rejoining traffic, and anything that sat above the sills deserves a proper inspection rather than an optimistic one.

Access is its own category of recovery

A significant share of recovery work in Colombo involves vehicles that are undamaged and perfectly capable of being towed — if only something could reach them. Basement car parks with height limits that rule out a flatbed. Lanes parked solid on both sides with nowhere to turn. Service yards behind a gate narrower than the yard. Building sites where the ground will not carry a loaded truck.

These are solved in stages: a wheel-lift extracts the vehicle to open ground, and it transfers there if it needs a flatbed for the rest of the journey. It sounds like extra work and it adds about fifteen minutes. What it avoids is a truck arriving, finding it cannot physically reach the vehicle, and leaving.

This is why the question on the phone is usually about the road rather than the fault. Describe where the vehicle is standing — open road, narrow lane, car park, basement, yard, off the surface — and the right equipment gets sent the first time.

What to do before help arrives

Hazard lights immediately, and on a fast road get everyone out and well back from the carriageway on the side away from traffic. A stationary vehicle struck from behind puts everyone inside it in the impact, and that risk is not theoretical on Sri Lankan roads at night.

Do not try to drive out of soft ground or a drain. Spinning wheels dig deeper, cook a clutch and heat a differential that was never designed for sustained slip. A few seconds of gentle attempt is reasonable; thirty seconds at full throttle is damage.

If you know where the recovery eye lives, fit it while you wait. If you do not, leave it — guessing at an attachment point is how a free recovery becomes a repair bill. And if there has been a collision, photograph the scene and the positions before anything moves.

Where we cover

Vehicle recovery runs twenty-four hours a day right across Colombo — the city centre, the eastern and southern suburbs, the coastal routes and the outer towns — with long-distance transport onward to anywhere in Sri Lanka. Tell us what the vehicle is, what it is resting on and how it got there, and you get a firm price before anything is attached to it.

What decides the price

Towing is never one flat number. Here is exactly what we ask about, so you know what the quote is based on.

Tell us the vehicle, where it is and what happened. You get a clear price on the phone before a truck rolls, and you approve it before we start.
